Some years ago my dad Alan McEachran – a teacher of Philosophy for over 25 years – wrote a few students guides to classic texts. His precis of The German Ideology in modern English is perfect as a primer to the text, and I’ve published it here for posterity and in the hope that students of this important text might find it useful.

    Oh, could I just add: it was not me who nicked his Bert Jansch LP. Whatever it may have looked like that copy I had (still have somewhere, rather battered) when he and Pat visited Aberystwyth was my very own bought shortly after I left Cambridge. Imitation is not original (I never was very) but it is the sincerest form of flattery. I learned a lot from Alan and my other friends at Clare, and needed to because callow isn't in it recalling my temperament there.
    He would have been surprised at if he knew that certain of my students in the 1970s thought that I was a Marxist. Never was, deny it strenuously!

    Please send my best regards to your dad. I remember his toiling over interpretations of Marx and the Gotha program etc. at Clare College, Cambridge in the Sidgwick Avenue library and elsewhere.

    Regarding Alan MacEachran, is this the same person who taught me A-Level Philosophy at Sutton Coldfield College of FE between 1991-1992? If so, please pass on my wishes to him. He was an excellent tutor.
